Adapted Physical Education

Northeastern University (Burlington, Campus) July 17th – 21st, 2006

Summer Institute Series 2006 Programs

Course Description

By John R. Passarini Ed.D., CAPE.

“Nobody is disabled, we are all differently-abled.”

An inclusive environment ensures that all students feel they belong.  An inclusive Physical Education program recognizes the inherent value of each student; the right to take risks and make mistakes; the need for independence and self-determination; and the right to choice.

Adapted physical education is the art and science of assessment and prescription within the psychomotor domain. It ensures that an individual who is differently-abled has access to programs designed to develop physical and motor fitness, fundamental motor skills and patterns, and skills in aquatics, dance, and individual and group games and sports so that the individual can ultimately participate in community-based leisure, recreation, and sport activities and as such, enjoy an enhanced quality of life.

At the completion of this course teachers will be able:

  1. To apply knowledge about the physical, motor, cognitive/learning, and social/emotional characteristics and needs typical of individuals who are differently-abled.
  2. To demonstrate knowledge about safety and planning aspects (including developmentally appropriate formal and informal assessment, collaboration of services, strategies, and resources, IEP writing, behavior management, and activity selection).
  3. To demonstrate knowledge in lesson planning and instruction to meet multiple needs and learning styles of individuals who are differently-abled. These skills will include adapting activity/equipment, using instructional tasks, cues, and prompts, implementing managerial and instructional routines; identifying signs of learner distress and designing strategies for safe reflective teaching of physical education.
  4. To effectively utilize the “Inclusion Cube” check lists and grid.  The Inclusion Cube program is designed to represent a large amount of information that can be identified, separated, categorized, and accessed systematically, orderly, and quickly.  This program will help teachers provide a continuum of services by increasing their knowledge of a wide range of “Ability” and by taking a logical and rational approach to implement effective instructional techniques that craft the Learning environment for children of all abilities.
