As Katie Lynch filled out the papers last
year nominating her former teacher, John Pas-
sarini of Lexington, for an award, she was sure
he was going to win.
However, her mother reminded her that
thousands of people were applying.
"And she said, Well, odds don't mean any-,
thing,'" Joan Lynch recalled.
Last week, Passarini, an adapted physical
education teacher at Wayland public schools,
was named Outstanding Teacher of the Year by
the Walt Disney Co., out of more than 185,000
nominees nationwide. Passarini, who was se-
lected by a group of teachers and members of
educational organizations assembled by Dis-
ney, will receive $25,000 and Wayland public
schools, $10,000.
"This is equivalent to the World Series for
educators," said Gary Burton, Wayland super-
intendent of schools.
Appropriately enough, Passarini is going to
Disney World. The company is sponsoring a
workshop and seminar in Orlando next month
designed to help Passarini and the other 31 fi-
nalists for the award share their skills and im-
